Young Achievers' Awards - 2004/2005

On Wednesday, 19th March 2005, the Governor of Victoria, Mr John Landy, presented Rotary Club of Melbourne Young Achiever Awards to three outstanding young Victorians.

Chris Lewin  (The Sir Albert Coates Award)

Chris Lewin is an arts engineering student at the University of Melbourne.

The Award recognizes Chris's leadership management and coaching as part of the team Melbourne yachting group.

This year he was the youngest skipper in the Sydney Hobart race. He led a team of students that finished 25th which in itself was an achievement given the damage done to some of the yachts.

His achievement in getting sponsors, training the team and enabling team Melbourne to compete was remarkable.

David Smerdon

David Smerdon is studying science/commerce at the University of Melbourne. In 2004 David was a Melbourne National scholar at Melbourne University.

The Award recognizes David's achievements in chess competition and coaching.

In 2004 (age 19) he was Victorian Open Chess Champion, Queensland Open Chess champion and Australian Masters Champion.

He has represented Australia at various overseas chess competitions. He gives something back to chess by tutoring juniors and raising the profile of press amongst his fellow students

Sally Hasler

Sally Hasler is an outstanding young leader who has made important contributions to the work of St John Ambulance.

Sally for two years chaired the Victorian Youth Council of St Johns and is now chair of the Australian Youth Council.  She has also been appointed to the Board of the St John Ambulance Foundation.

She is a volunteer on a street bus with Open Family Australia and was a member of the Victorian Government Youth Round Table.

In 2002, Sally was the recipient of a Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Today we recognize Sally's achievements in the field of community service, in particular her outstanding contribution to the work of St John Ambulance.
