Rotary Foundation Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award

Rotary Club of Melbourne member Rotarian Alex Buchanan is the 2008/2009 recipient of the prestigious Rotary Foundation Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award.

This award is one of the highest awards bestowed by The Rotary Foundation.

This award honors outstanding Rotary Foundation alumni who have contributed to greater understanding and peace through service to humanity, and whose significant achievements have enriched their profession or vocation.

Rotarian Alex Buchanan was a 1959-60 Ambassadorial Scholar sponsored by the Rotary Club of Korumburra, Victoria, Australia to study agriculture and science at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, USA.

Dr. Buchanan is best known for developing the Australian High Protein Milk Biscuit in 1965 which continues to be used in disaster areas around the world today.

 

While with Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, he also developed nutrition balanced infant food in Thailand.  

 

He served as the editor of ASEAN (Association of South East Asia Nations) Food Journal and was a founding member of the United Nations University World Hunger program.

 

Today he is executive director of the ATSE Crawford Fund which provides for the Royce and Jean Abbey Agricultural Training Program for Ambassadorial Scholars from low-income countries.
