Training Awards – 2010/2011
The Rotary Club of Melbourne held its annual Training Awards day on the 29th of September 2010. Each student was presented with a cheque for $1,000 and a club certificate of achievement.. All three spoke to the club about their personal training experiences and their future aspirations. Traditionally, one student is given further recognition by being nominated for the “Frank Newman Award” this award recognises Club member Frank’s role in promoting and supporting apprenticeships and training nationally and is presented to the student the Vocational Services Committee considers the outstanding candidate for 2009. Sadly, Frank who has always been available and pleased to present this award passed away in May of 2009. A brief summary of the successful candidates follows:
Our first Awardee Callan Ridge is a 21 year old Apprentice who was awarded the top Apprentice in his field at Bendigo Regional Tafe in both his 1st and 2nd year. Now in his third year of his Engineering Mechanical apprenticeship and employed by the Australian Industry Group Training Services and hosted to W. McCullooch Hydraulic Engineers. Callan has undertaken a variety of training extras such as completing accredited modules in computer aided design towards his Diploma in Engineering to broaden his career options. At the recent State Skills Awards Callan was selected as the Victorian Apprentice of the Year .
Our second Awardee Matthew Beavis has completed his Certificate III in Automotive Mechanical Technology at the Box Hill Institute of Tafe and is currently employed by BMW Group Australia. Matthew has recently won a high achievement award from BMW and undertook an exchange study programme in Alberta, Canada and was selected to participate in the 2008 Commonwealth Government Apprenticeship roundtable. (With his first Award he purchased the suit he wore today with this Award money he plans to by tools.)
Our third recipient Michael Hogan completed a Certificate I and II in Automotive Electrical Technology at Holmesglen Tafe. Michael now teaches there and operates his own Auto Electrical business. Michael won the Institutes Student Excellence Award for his certificate II. Michael is also a lieutenant in the CFA, having completed a Certificate IV in Fire Technology at Swinburne Tafe. Michael was awarded the Victorian Student of the Year at the recent State Skills Awards. We have chosen Michael as the winner of the Frank Newman Training Award.
