Vocational Service Award - 2007/2008

On 17th October 2007, the Club recognized the work of Professor Jeffrey Roasenfeld with the presentation to him of the Vocational Service Award.

This award is made annually by RCM in recognition of excellence in vocation, and service to the community through that vocation.  Professor Rosenfeld was delighted to receive the award.

Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld is an eminent neurosurgeon whose professional expertise has been recognised throughout the world.  He is a pioneer in the field of hypothalamic hamartoma surgery in children with gastric epilepsy.  He has a particular academic and clinical interest in neurotrauma.

Professor Rosenfeld has studied, taught, and practised in many countries and has contributed his expertise widely in developing nations.  His contribution to medical services in Australia is also legendary.

In 1984, Professor Rosenfeld joined the Australian Army Reserve and currently holds the rank of Brigadier.  He became Assistant Surgeon General Australian Defence Force - Army and director General Defence Health Reserves - Army in 1987, and has since held many senior positions in the Army Medical Service.  He is currently Chair of the General Surgery Consultative Group to the Director General of Defence Health Services.  His direct practical involvement in the military has led to him serving overseas on seven deployments, they have been to Rwanda, Bougainville, East Timor (with INTERFET and UNTAET), the Solomon Islands and Iraq.  From September 2004 to January 2005 he was the neurosurgeon to the 332nd Expeditionary Medical Group, US Air Force, based at Camp Anaconda, Balad, Iraq.

Professor Rosenfeld is married and has three children.  He is a gifted musician, playing the clarinet to concert standard and able to play most woodwind instruments.  As a student, he had to choose between medicine and a career as a professional musician.

Professor Rosenfeld is a humble man with great professional and interpersonal skills.  His work and absolute dedication to it is of immense value to Australia and to the world community.  It is with pleasure that the Rotary Club of Melbourne recognises Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld with its Vocational Service Award.
