Young Achiever Awards - 2006/2007

Each year the Rotary Club of Melbourne recognises and honours outstanding young achievers with an award and a cheque for $1,000.  Candidates need to show outstanding success in their formal education AND have made a significant contribution in the form of service to the community.

The two young achievers for 2007 are

Ali Ahmad Alamein whose award is in the area of Science and Technology.

He was born in Iraq and at age 5 left that country with his parents to live in Iran because of political oppression by the Baathist regime.  His father eventually came to Australia leaving behind the family (mother and four sons) who eventually followed through illegal channels (they were involved in the Tampa incident).  Ali arrived in Australia on 3 September 2002 with virtually no knowledge of the English language.  He is studying Engineering and Science.

Ali is a fluent native speaker of Arabic and Farsi.  His newfound English language skill has made him a valuable interpreter between the three languages, doing voluntary work with the refugee and migrant communities.

Additionally Ali has been selected to receive the Sir Albert Coates Young Achiever Award and a book entitled, "The Albert Coates Story" by Albert Coates and Newman Rosenthal.

This Award was initiated in recognition of the Club's late Past President (1954-55), an outstanding Surgeon, Soldier, Teacher, Humanitarian and Linguist.  The Award is made each year, in perpetuity, to persons who exhibit abilities and skills consistent with his.  Such abilities and skills will include those pertaining to medical, teaching, humanitarian and language related activities.

The Trustees of the Albert Coates Memorial Trust are represented at the Club meeting today by Mr and Mrs Walter Gherardin.  Mrs Gherardin is Sir Albert's daughter.

Joseph Clifford whose award is in Business and Public Administration.

He is an indigenous student studying Commerce/Law Diploma Modern Languages (Japanese) at the University of Melbourne.  He entered Trinity College on the Friends' Scholarship.  Joseph was chosen as an Australian Youth Ambassador to the World Expo in Aichi, Japan.  The Commerce Faculty awarded him the inaugural National Australia Bank Economics and Commerce Indigenous Scholarship.

Joseph does much voluntary work with the indigenous community with particularly notable involvement in the Northern Territory.  He is a strong contributor to the "life" of the University.

The awards were presented by Professor David de Kretser Governor of Victoria
