Sir John Reid Community Service Award – 2006/2007

On 1st November 2006, Beryl Jones, was presented with the Sir John Reid Community Service Award.

The Rotary Club of Melbourne awards the Sir John Reid Community Service Award annually to a person in the Victorian community whose community service is judged to be worthy of special notice, and honoured Beryl for her significant achievements in the community service.

Beryl spoke of her proactive contribution to various projects and programs in a wide range of areas, demonstrating her unfailing commitment and ability to accept responsibility for a large number of roles.  It was evident through her mention of her multiple roles how she has over the years successfully engaged with the community and almost single-handedly developed a pool of qualified and enthusiastic volunteers.

Beryl's sustained contribution began with her development of a fully-fledged music program in her role as a Music Specialist Teacher at Essex Heights Primary School.  President of the Association of Music Educators for six years, during this time Beryl also commenced work as a Technical Operator on Radio 3RPH, beginning work each day at 5am to read the day's newspaper for the visually impaired.

Over a ten year period Beryl has also been heavily involved in volunteer work with the Smith Family in various capacities.  She also initiated a group of qualified volunteers called the Community Relations Committee who complement work by the Smith Family by bringing a range of additional skills into the organization.

We congratulate Beryl on her energy and enthusiasm and than her sincerely for her valuable community service that has set her apart as a role model.
